Illustrate the failure management by a leader according to Kalam. (Or) Write in your own words, Kalam's experience of failure management by a leader.

When Abdul Kalam was interested the job putting the satellite Rohini into orbit by 1980 the funds were very less and human resources were also Limited but they were asked to set the launch by 1980. By 1979 in the month of August they thought everything was ready. As a project director he went to the control Centre for the launch. There he found a small problem but the experts had assured him not to worry and they had done their calculations and there was enough reserve fuel. So he bypassed the computer, switched to manual mode and launched the rocket. In the first stage Everything worked fine. In the second stage a problem developed. Instead of the satellite going into the orbit the whole rocket system plunged into the Bay of Bengal and it was a big failure.

The chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation professor Satish Dhawan had called a press conference. Though he was the leader of the Organisation he did not blame the Project Director instead he took the responsibility for the failure. He said that the team had worked very hard but that it needed more technological support. He assured the media that in another year the team would definitely succeed. Now as a project director it was the responsibility of Kalam but the leader of the Organisation had come forward and it took the whole responsibility of the failure on his Shoulders. This attitude of his leader, Prof. Dhawan taught Kalam to a lesson how a leader should be. Above all the leader “absorbs the failure and takes the responsibility and gives the credit for success to his team while executing the mission,” Kalam said.

What are the six leadership traits that Kalam talks about ?

The six leadership traits that Kalam talks about are the leader must have vision. Without vision. Without vision one cannot be a leader. Next, the leader must be able to travel into an unexplored path. Normally, the tendency of people is to travel along well-laid out ways. Thirdly, the leader must know how to manage success and even more importantly failure. The fourth trait according to Kalam is that the leader should have the courage to make decisions. Further, Kalam says that the leader should have nobility in management. Every action of the leader should be transparent. And final, the leader should work with integrity and succeed with integrity.

Explain in your own words, Kalam’s goal for energy independence for India. (Or)

Kalam’s goal for energy independence for India.

Speaking about energy independence for Indi, Kalam says that he has set a goal of three dimensional approach for the purpose. Firstly, he said that we should invest in solar power. Today as a solar power is not economical CNT (Carbon Nano Tubes) composites that can increase the efficiency of solar cells must be used. Secondly, nuclear energy must be used because India has abundant Thorium based nuclear reactors. And moreover this is definitely a clean solution to energy needs. The third dimension according to Kalam is to focus on bio fuels and algae. These three initiatives can free India from dependence on fossil fuels. And also help in maintaining a clean environment.
